I Could Eat This Coleslaw Everyday And I Don’t Even Like Coleslaw!

You guys. I kind of found my new obsession for lunch. Typically I have a big protein breakfast (Bacon, eggs, fermented sour dough).. Yes BACON read here if you are sketch about bacon…we eat a high GOOD fat, moderate-high protein, lower carb diet in my house.) Then for lunch I typically go for either veggies with good fats like a salad with avocado and seeds/nuts or something like this! It does have a bit of sugar due to the BBQ sauce, but I get the lowest sugar organic BBQ sauce I can find. We try to keep our sugars under 20 grams a day, some days none. That includes fruits, snacks, sugar, dried  in sauces like what calls for this recipe.

So many good nutrients in this easy lunch!

Cabbage is brain food! It is full of vitamin K and anthocyanins that help with mental function and concentration. These nutrients also prevent nerve damage, improving your defense against Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia. Red cabbage has the highest amount of these power nutrients. It is also High in sulfur, the beautifying mineral. Cabbage helps dry up oily and acne skin. Internally sulfur is essential for keratin, a protein substance necessary for healthy hair, nails, and skin. Also, he natural red pigments of red cabbage (betalains) is said to lower blood sugar levels and boost insulin production.

Hemp seeds have an excellent 3:1 balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which keeps your heart healthy along with eyes, skin and essentially your body “oiled” up well. They are super high in minerals as well and are considered a “perfect protein” not only containing all 20 amino acids, but also each of the 9 essential amino acids that our bodies cannot produce. They help balance hormones as well! A food you definitely want to add into your weekly routine.

DIY Wall Hanging

I had so much fun making this for Zion’s room and wanted to share how i did it so you can do it too for your home!

This bad boy is MASSIVE. Now you can make yours small or large, but I chose to do a big one because eventually when we move into our home (next year sometime) I want it for one of the walls so I thought I’d go big and use it behind Zi’s crib for this season.

DIY WALL HANGING INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP 1:

Go get yourself something to hang your yarn on. I purchased 3 branches at Hobby Lobby for $7.99 (the 50% code was on branches that week.) The one I used was a pretty white birch branch.

Processed with VSCO with c9 preset

Step 2: Ready for it….? Go out and get yourself a MASSIVE amount of yarn. Like massive. I used almost an entire cone. I would say…close to 1,000 yards. Not sure. But remember, my wall hanging is roughly 3 ft x 4 ft. It ain’t small. I used Ashland and Bay thick and thin yarn.  They are the best company with the largest amount of yarn to use. My yarn came unconditioned so I had to wash it first. TAKE NOTE: This will add a whole day to your process. If your yarn comes unconditioned it is important to soak it and let it air dry before using. It gets the oils off and puffs up a bit more. Let it air dry in the shower or outside hanging on hangers until dry (overnight should do it). NOTE: Pre cut your yarn before you soak it. It gets mushy and tangled and if it’s pre cut it is easier to piece apart to hang.

Processed with VSCO with c9 preset

Processed with VSCO with c9 preset

Step 3: This applies in between step 2.  Pre cut your yarn.  Okay, so if you you want a 2 ft long wall hanging, you need to cut your yarn 4 feet long because you will loop it on the branch and thus slashing the length in half and doubling it.  Cut 1 piece and then use that piece over and over as a guide as you cut. I just cut until I thought I had enough. I ended up having to cut more. Okay back to the washing and drying ( ONLY APPLIES TO UNCONDITIONED YARN).. After it dries you can begin. OR if your yarn is conditioned, go ahead and start looping.

Step 4: Loop your yarn on your branch.  See how it’s laid in the above picture? Great grab the loop part and place it under the branch where you are going to attach it. Now take the ends and and loop it through and the first loop around the branch. I hope that makes sense. It’s super easy so if you find it’s complicated, I didn’t do a great job explaining it so here’s a ini video below.  BUT first, I tied on my string I was going to hang it with so that I could loop over the string where i tied it on the branch to hide it. Okay, loop, loop, loop. Super close together.

Happy Halloween!

Our first Halloween with our little man!  So much fun! I’m all about traditions. Whatever the Holiday season is for you, make it about family, filled with love and ALOT of fun! We dressed up, visited family, had a pizza party with friend’s and passed out candy to the cutest little kids on the block.  I am so excited to create traditions with my family this Holiday season. Making memories to cherish in your soul forever is so much of what life is all about.  It is our goal as parents to do the things our children will look back and remember forever, or see photos of and think, man I had a great childhood, I want to do that for my kids and so the pattern continues. Okay and now…….

Featuring Zion the lion, the lion tamer and the lion poop picker upper….Ain’t that the truth.  Oh, plus that is his buddy Roar as a Hillbilly.  We love our friends the Rowen’s so much we all dressed up for a photo op and made pizza and had good, solid hangs. Find your people, people and love them well! Oh and p.s.s. see that batman onesie? He wore that all day. Under his costume because…Why the heck not.

Zion is 4 months! What I’ve Learned So Far + Our Fav Toys!

I can’t believe Zion has been Earth side 4 months! It’s almost Halloween and I can’t wait to show you guys his outfit! This pumpkin outfit was for a little fall festival but his Halloween outfit… oh man I can’t wait! Anyways, he’s already 4 months and what did we do with all our time without him? Spenc and I were talking about that yesterday and literally laughing. We thought, how did we ever do life without him? We must’ve been so bored! Life is like a million times better with Zi.  It’s amazing. Things I’ve learned so far…

  1. Be brave. In mamahood, as a woman, as a person, and a wife. Just be brave.
  2. Find what works for you. Do what works. Co-sleep, crib, CIY, comfort nurse, bottle, breast….whatever. Do what works for you and your family. No pressure, no stress.
  3. Literally do not care what anyone thinks about you or your life. (This is like a general…”Please learn this no matter how old you are, kids or no kids” advice, but especially when you have a baby. They watch everything. Do you want them growing up watching a fearful person or a brave, happy person? Just do it, baby. Go do it. Go get your nails done with the potential that your baby cries the whole time. Nurse on the go. Go to nice restaurants with your baby. Do your life.
  4. Your attitude effects there attitude and emotions. Check yourself before you …wreck your baby’s mood. For real though.  Your atmosphere effects them. Positively or negatively. You are watering your baby with the things you say, do and react to daily. Try to argue with your spouse in the other room. LOL.
  5. Don’t stop enjoying what you like to do now that you are raising tiny humans. You did not die when you had a kid. Keep the hobbies even if you literally have no time for them but once every few months. Put yourself together if you want. Find a way that works for you and your baby. Doings is tough at times. You wanna do your make up but the baby is freaking out. Don’t give up. Find what works for the baby and push through to do it. I know it seems to insignificant but you’ll be so proud of yourself for getting through it and not throwing in the towel every time an obstacle comes your way. It’s so much more than getting your make up on. LOL. It’s you being able to get through tough situations and finding out how to maneuver your life with a new addition. If you gave in every time baby freaked out, you’d hardly get out the door. Wear him, stroll him, set him up in a bouncer, a rocker, on the floor, and get on with what you need to get done. AKA the dishes and your teeth brushed and maybe some mascara can I get an amen?
  6. Enjoy every day. It goes by fast! Take the million photos, record the million videos, do the outfits, do the fun things. Have fun, don’t sweat the small stuff. Let everything…e v e r y t h i n g roll off your back. Life is too short and time with your LO is even shorter.  With that being said…i’m gunna go play with my baby! <3

Okay so Mister Man loves to play, chew, slobber, shake everything like every baby this age and he carries Plan Toys USA wooden keys around with him everywhere! It’s hilarious!  But we love their wooden non toxic toys because if we can avoid toxins, then we certainly will! The toys range for all ages and they have got some serious cute, fun stuff along with games and interactive learning as they get older. Other things Zion is a HUGE fan of are the chewable books like this. They are called indestructibles. Fitting. They cannot tear, are toxin free, water proof, cannot rip, can be chewed on, slobbered on, crinkled etc. Zion is kinda obsessed and I don’t blame him. He also loves his bouncer and his standing gym. We rotate through out the day and then when all else fails, we go strolling in his stroller which He is also a huge fan of. Hey, whatever works. You wanna play in your stroller all day buddy? I’ll milk that while it lasts! I’ll talk about his stroller in a future post and why we love is SO.DANG.MUCH.

Oh, and his pumpkin outift? Target!

Pumpkin Patchin’

Fall is so fun! All the colors change, it ushers in the Holidays and it’s filled with another year of costumes, thanksgiving, lots of yummy food, the honoring of grace, new beginnings and with all that, fun things to do! When I was pregnant, I couldn’t wait to bring my baby along and have him experience all the magic of the seasons. It’s so fun! So first off for the season…boppin’ around the pumpkin patch.

Let’s be honest, it was way more fun for us parents then for him, but we love introducing him to new things all the time. I feel like even the little things shape him. Along with looking at rows and patches of pumpkins, we saw goats, chickens, and sheep and Zion was memorized.  We are coming to find out he is not really a scared baby….other than when I sneeze. Haha! What are some of your favorite things to do as a family during the seasons?

Tips For Traveling With A Newborn

If you follow me on Snapchat or Instagram, you that we’ve been traveling with Zion from the time he was 6 weeks old.  He is just under 4 months and we’ve been on 4 planes, 2 road trips, lots of rental cars, trunk changes, nursing in public and #babytravellife.  And while it certainly has it’s challenges, it has been a blast and I highly reccomend it. Cast fear to the wind and go for it. Honestly, challenges are fun for me so to me, traveling with our baby is even more fun then traveling just the two of us. We haven’t let it limit us in any way and it has cultivated more confidence, less fear, more patience, less worry and has taught us so much.  People say “Travel before you have kids”, I say travel whenever you want and bring your babies along.

Here are some things I’ve learned along the way

  1. Get yourself a travel bassinet.

No need to carry along a pack n play or anything super bulky.  I use a travel diaper bag that converts into a bassinet and place him right in between us in bed or on the floor. The bottom opens up as he grows so he has plenty of room. If the flight is empty I can open it up and lay it on the plane seats so he can stretch out and kick or sleep. If we are at the park, I can open it up and again, he can play or sleep in something clean, safe and comfy. It is the. best. This is what I use and recommend.

2. It is okay if you need to nurse in public.

I know some ladies have a hard time with this, but girlfriend, just do it. Cover or no cover, once you allow yourself the freedom to be able to nourish your baby without thought of what anyone thinks, things become ALOT less stressful.  IF comments come, ignore them. Honestly, I have never once gotten a comment and I nursed walking onto a plane…eyes right at chest level and everything. I thought to myself well it’s either this of a screaming baby, so your welcome people.  It ain’t no thing. You are not immodest, you are feeding your baby. Go for it girl!

Processed with VSCO with c7 preset

3. Keep things light.

Learn to go with the flow. Traveling always brings the unexpected.  Late flights, full flights, long lines, cancelled flights, early mornings, late nights, hotel glitches etc. Keep positive in mind and spirit and know that God has your best interest in mind. The universe is wired for your good so know that is something goes unexpected, something better is on its way and stay happy. An upset Mom causes a stressed out Dad and a moody baby. Babies can feel your energy and emotion. So for the sake of the whole family. Keep Calm and Carry On. You’ll thank yourself for biting your tongue and holding back the full flip out.  Take a breathe, grab a coffee and focus on the cuteness of your baby. Everything will melt away and you’ll get where you need to be shortly and enjoy the journey.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

4. Invest is a good baby wearing carrier

Eventually your baby will want to be out of the car seat and held.  Making this way easier while traveling (and in everyday life in general) is get yourself a carrier. The Ergo Baby is great and can be used by Mom and Dad. Additionally, there are slings, wraps, and beyond that will come in handy on the go. You can stash it in your carry on or wear right onto the plane (that is what I do). I always wear him through security and then if there is extra room on the plane, I place him in the car seat and stroll him to sleep before boarding. Our airport schedule goes a little like this:

  1. Nurse before we get out of the car or rental car.
  2. Wrap him and walk the stroller in
  3. Check in, get his lap pass
  4. Go through security with him wrapped (If you travel a lot take time to go get pre check for easier security).
  5. Get to the gate and transfer him into car seat or keep him wrapped depending on circumstances.
  6. Gate check stroller & car seat if there is no extra seating for it. (If there is extra seating the flight attendants will always free that seat up for the baby and move people around-Southwest, you can choose your own seating and its A+)
  7. Depending on his temperament, he is either sleeping, up and playing or fussy because he wants to sleep or eat. If the third is happening, I nurse him while everyone is getting on the plane until we are up in the air. He usually passes out or gets up to play a bit more. I will wrap him and walk to aisles (haven’t needed to yet) to get him to sleep if we are in the air and he isn’t going down. Lots of parents to this. People get it.

IMG_2682

5. Remember to have fun and take lots of photos and make memories! <3 Looking back on all our trips, I wouldn’t have done it any other way. His shelves are now filled with souvenirs and photos of all the places we went when he was just a tiny guy.  Plus, at a young age, they sleep ALOT, so it really is pretty easy.  Life with LO always have there challenges, life is now different. Crying, blow outs, fussiness…its just part of life at times, if you can embrace it, then no matter what you go and do whether it is the grocery store or flying, will just be like how you do everything else. You find what works for you and you get through it!  #Momlife am I right!?

Leather and Plaid

This outfit is in my wardrobe year after year. I feel like this is a staple outfit. It pretty much is a uniform. Denim, plaid and leather are always a good match and never really go out of style.  It is great for running around town and getting errands done, comfy and you can wear it everyday if you want. There are few outfits I can use over and over again and this is one of them. Pair with a good pair of sneakers and you are set.
